Carpenter ants are almost like termites. Once they breach the walls of your home they begin excavating tunnels and little hollows in the wood structure of your home. Carpenter ants prefer moist wood to create their colonies in order to keep their eggs in a humid environment ideal for hatching.
In order to get rid of the carpenter ants you will need to properly identify them and where they are coming from. They are usually larger than a regular ant and they are certainly larger than termites. You may find them in swarms and you may also notice they have two sets of wings and little antennas.
Carpenter ants prefer wooded moist areas in your home like in a crawlspace, in the attic where the roof may be leaking or a basement. Other common places to check for these ants is anywhere moist wood may be found.
Tip: If you are having trouble locating the nest, try leaving out some honey in places you've previously see the ants and then watch to see where the ants travel back to. Usually, if one ant finds something to feed on they will bring more ants from the nest.
An effective way to get rid of Carpenter ants is to use boric acid once you've located the nest. You may have to drill small holes into the nest on order to get the boric acid into the nest which can easily be done by using a straw. Boric acid is commonly found at your local hardware store.
Again, Carpenter ants like damp wood so identify any leaks you may have in your home and get them fixed. If you locate one colony of Carpenter ants it's likely there are more so be sure to do a thorough inspection. The best time to see the ants is in the evening as this is when they are most active.
