Once ants have decided to inhabit an area, they can be troublesome to get rid off. Because of their small size and ability to adapt to many different environmental situations, ants can call many places "home", including your own home. Merely spraying some bug spray or trying to step on them is not going to rid you of these tiny pests. You must be prepared to come up with dedicated game plan if you want to get rid of ants for good.
Ants travel in colonies, usually with the leadership of a Queen ant. Obviously, the queen is the culprit of your problem in the first place because she is responsible for producing the several hundred ants you now have invading your home. The first step to containing the infestation is to destroy the Queen ant. She is typically the biggest ant in the bunch and she will also have small wings on her back. Her job is solely to lay eggs so eliminating her is just the first step to getting rid of ants.
Another popular way to get rid of ants is to set out a plate of cornmeal. The ants will eat the cornmeal and when they drink water, the cornmeal expands and it ruptures their digestive system killing them.
While this is not the preferred method for ant control, it does work and is safe for both pets and humans.
Tips:
Ants do not like cinnamon, try sprinkling some in places you know ants travel into your home.
Ants feed off of aphids and the sweet and sugary compund they produce. You should apply an insecticide in the spring and summer to your plants that prevent aphids and scale.
